Education and Training

For 30 years SafMed has provided educational support to the South African healthcare industry through various programs. We are committed to sharing and supporting clinical best practice to help our customers do their jobs more safely, effectively and efficiently.



SafMed offers Operator Training Programmes & In-Service Training to provide technical training on the proper care, use, and preventive maintenance of SafMed products and also to review parameters critical to effective operation. We offer this training on an ongoing basis to ensure that the information is constantly refreshed so that our customer are working optimally.



SafMed offers clinically driven education days focussing on CSSD Best Practice, Surgical Support, Low Temperature Sterilization, OR Integration and Track, Trace & Asset Management. These Education Days are tailored to the needs of each customer and are done onsite in order to make them accesible to staff. Information packs are handed out so that attendees can take away valuable information to use.



Foundation Course in Decontamination and Sterilization

SafMed offers a 5 module CSSD Foundation Course in a workshop format. The Foundation Course is a general introduction to the principles of sterilization and can be attended by anyone involved with Sterile Services. The purpose of this course is to provide all persons working directly or indirectly with sterile medical devices, a brief orientation into all aspects of CSSD.

The main objectives of this course are:

  • To recognise that all practices in the CSSD are guided / governed by legislation, as well as an introduction to said legislation
  • To recognise that there is a complete process that must be followed to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
  • To ensure basic understanding of the complete process to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices

Target group

All persons working directly or indirectly with sterile medical devices

Entry qualification

 Anyone working with sterile medical devices

The Modules are as follows:

  1. History of Sterile Services
  2. Infection Prevention: Standards of Care: Legal Implications
  3. Understanding the CSSD process: Principles of Cleaning; Inspection
  4. Understanding the CSSD process: Principles of Wrapping; Sterilization Sterile Storage and Dispatch
  5. Quality control: Process Monitoring: Tracking and Traceability: Record Keeping


Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management

SafMed offers a 10 module Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management which is run over two full days. The Advanced Course in Decontamination and Quality Management is an in depth training aimed at managers in the decontamination area and can be attended by anyone involved in a management/supervisory level in Theatre, CSSD, Pharmacy, Infection Control etc. who has attended and passed the Foundation Course.  The purpose of this course is to update and inform managers, working directly or indirectly with sterile medical devices, about new research, advances in technology, legislation, standards related to CSSD.

The main objectives of this course are:

  • To recognise that all practices in the CSSD are guided / governed by legislation, as well as an introduction to said legislation
  • To recognise that there is a complete process that must be followed to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
  • To ensure basic understanding of the complete process to ensure effective, safe reprocessing of medical devices
  • To ensure basic knowledge to indentify and manage risks in a CSSD
